RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is an RTLS technology which enables to track and trace as well as monitor different kinds of moving objects.
By using RFID technology, the information (which is typically a unique ID of objects, equipment but also living beings) is transferred wireless and automatically via radio frequency (RF).
In some cases applying RFID technology can enable a more productive operation than with barcode based systems since for RFID there is no need of a direct visual relation. In a given time it produces higher data throughput than barcode technology.
Thus the following benefits can be achieved:
- Time reduction of data processing
- More efficient data entry processes
The environmental conditions can highly influence the successful operation of the RFID technology. The structural material of buildings and the identified items can effect the spreading of the radio waves differently, thus impairing the readability in some cases.
Please note that the legal regulation of applying RF can differ from region to region, therefore there might be different versions needed from RFID reader and writer devices.
The usage of RFID technology is 100% safe, it has no harmful effect.
The operation of RFID technology
During the operation of the RFID technology, the reader unit (antenna, sensor) induces an electromagnetic field with pre-defined parameters. Using the electromagnetic field induced by the reader, the RFID tag passes the embedded information to the data processing system via digital signs by modifying the broadcast signal. Afterwards, the data is processed by different systems like warehouse management systems (WMS), Enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) based on business logic (store, process).
Hardware elements of RFID technology
- RFID antenna
- RFID controller
- RFID writer and/or reader device (installed or mobile)
- RFID tag printer
- RFID tag / label (media transponder, transponder unit)
The RFID gate is an installed equipment designed and implemented by our company, based on the project specification. It includes the main components of the RFID system. Features are as follows:
- Easy installation
- Durable design
- Easy set-up
- The configuration includes all accessories for installation (cables, fasteners, etc.)
To whom we recommend it
The implementation of an RFID system is recommended in cases when fast, simultaneous and accurate data handling are of key importance. During the design of an RFID system the following points should be mostly considered:
- Area (size, quality)
- Environment (materials, processes, systems)
- Reading points and distance
- Quantity of the handled articles
- Costs (OPEX & CAPEX) and their returns (ROI)
Our company has many years of experience and expertise concerning RFID technology, mostly in industrial and logistics relations. We have installed and maintained RFID systems in several well-known manufacturing companies. We mainly focus on the UHF based RFID solutions and believe in full scale logistics concepts.
By the application of this technology a digitalized, paperless “smart factory” economy can be realized, which also meets the requirement of Industry 4.0 (Industrie 4.0).
