RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is an RTLS technology which enables to track and trace as well as monitor different kinds of moving objects.

By using RFID technology, the information (which is typically a unique ID of objects, equipment but also living beings) is transferred wireless and automatically via radio frequency (RF).

In some cases applying RFID technology can enable a more productive operation than with barcode based systems since for RFID there is no need of a direct visual relation. In a given time it produces higher data throughput than barcode technology.

The operation of RFID technology

During the operation of the RFID technology, the reader unit (antenna, sensor) induces an electromagnetic field with pre-defined parameters. Using the electromagnetic field induced by the reader, the RFID tag passes the embedded information to the data processing system via digital signs by modifying the broadcast signal. Afterwards, the data is processed by different systems like warehouse management systems (WMS), Enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) based on business logic (store, process).
